Monte Avena Flying Site – Dolomites, Italian Alps

Monte Avena is located in the southwestern part of the Dolomites, within the Italian Alps. This region is renowned for its stunning landscapes and numerous nature reserves, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Paragliding flights typically head toward the city of Belluno, where the surrounding peaks often rise above 2,000 meters above sea level.

Flying Conditions
The best time for paragliding competitions is from May to August, when the weather is sunny and thermals are active. The prevailing winds come from the south and southeast, with an average cloud base between 2,000 and 2,500 meters. During this period, temperatures generally range from 20°C to 30°C.

Take-Off – Monte Avena (1,400 m ASL)
Monte Avena offers several take-off areas, allowing pilots to choose their launch direction based on wind conditions—south, east, or west.

  • West Take-Off: 46.030513, 11.816399

  • South/Southeast Take-Off: 46.029925, 11.826044

The launch area is a wide, obstacle-free pastureland, suitable for top landings even by newly certified pilots. The open space can accommodate over 20 gliders preparing for take-off. Access is convenient via a dirt road that supports minibuses and emergency vehicles. A parking lot with space for more than 30 cars is located nearby, along with the agritourism site Malga Campet.

Accessibility & Safety
The area is well-suited for flying, with several safe landing options and lightly trafficked roads, making pilot retrieval easy. The launch site is about a 25-minute drive from the main landing zone, accessible via an asphalt road (except for the last 2 km).

Official Landing – Boscherai Sports Area, Pedavena (350 m ASL)
Coordinates: 46.029962, 11.879796
Located at the base of Monte Avena, east of the Belluno valley, the official landing zone spans approximately 20,000 m². Its rectangular shape and lack of obstacles allow for safe landings regardless of wind direction. The Belluno valley itself extends about 40 km westward and 15 km northward, offering ample space and favorable geography for paragliding activities.
