Governador Valadares – World Capital of Free Flight

Governador Valadares is located in eastern Minas Gerais State, in the Rio Doce Valley region. It has a population of approximately 280,000 inhabitants. The local terrain is relatively undulating, with average altitudes ranging from 150 to 300 meters, featuring gentle hills, valleys, and watercourses—most notably the plains along the Doce River.
Standing out from the surrounding landscape is Pico da Ibituruna, reaching an altitude of 1,123 meters, where our takeoff area is located.

Distance from HQ:
16.7km / 30 – 60 minutes

Flying Season and Conditions

Based on current meteorological tools and the experience of our staff, the proposed dates align with the Municipal calendar and, more importantly, represent excellent periods for free flight, ensuring safe and high-quality tasks.
Historically, the period from January to May in Governador Valadares has consistently provided the best conditions for high-level competitions.
For those who “bet” on the influence of the Full Moon, both proposed dates fall under its cycle to ensure the local weather conditions are maximized.
The first proposed date is characterized by higher temperatures and a larger “flight window” with longer days; however, there is a possibility of quick rain showers early in the morning or at the end of the day.
Between January and April, the last two editions of the PWC (Paragliding World Cup) SuperFinal were held in Governador Valadares, with over 90% of the days being flyable and resulting in successful, competitive tasks.

Pico da Ibituruna:

Pico da Ibituruna: Pico da Ibituruna stands at 1,123m ASL (Above Sea Level) and approximately 860m above the surrounding landscape. The regional terrain is relatively flat, featuring small rolling hills between 150 to 300 meters, and a reliable network of paved roads.
The wind is predominantly light, generally not exceeding 8 to 12 km/h.
This allows for a wide variety of tasks to be set in virtually any direction, with an average total distance of 75 km per task.

Landing and Flying Conditions:

Throughout the entire region, there are many large areas suitable for landing with unrestricted access. This ensures safe flying and landing, with easy access for retrieve and emergency services.

Thermals: Thermals are generally wide and smooth, rarely exceeding 3 to 4 m/s.

Take off area:

Owned and managed by the Municipality of Governador Valadares, the takeoff area is extremely spacious and covered in grass, allowing for the simultaneous launch of more than ten paragliders. On average, it takes only 30 minutes for all pilots to take off in a competition with 125 to 150 participants..

Landing Areas / Goals:

A large number of goals are scattered throughout the flying region (indicated by red dots on the map). Each goal provides safe landing space for at least three paragliders simultaneously and is free of hazardous obstacles. These sites will be rigorously inspected during the two weeks leading up to the competition to ensure no new obstacles have emerged that could increase the risk of accidents.

The main goal, Feira da Paz, will be equipped with full infrastructure for comfort and safety at the end of each task, including a dedicated Fire Department emergency and rescue team on standby.

On every task day, a tent will be set up at the designated goal to provide a clear visual signal for pilots, as well as shelter for both pilots and visitors. Additionally, an ample supply of windsocks and markers will be used to clearly indicate any potentially hazardous areas.

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the numerous official goals, the region is abundant in excellent landing areas. These are spread across the entire territory, offering easy access for retrieve teams and no issues with local landowners.

The city has a good hospital infrastructure, both public and private, with specialized care for
cases of bone and/or neurological trauma.
The organization will have a social assistance structure to support/assist pilots and their
families in case of serious or minor accidents, facilitating rapid examination and care in possible
emergencies.

The Emergency Medical Service (SAMU 192) is consistently present at the launch site and remains on standby in the city throughout the entire event period.
An aerial rescue unit is stationed in the city at the 5th BRAVE (State Regional Aviation Base), reducing emergency response time to less than 30 minutes.
