The town of Cap. Andrade gives the competitors a warm welcome

Pilots arrived to launch with the cloud level slightly below the peak. The forecast called for the clouds to break up and rise as the day went on, so the task committee called a conservative but challenging task of 65.25km that zigzagged to the SSE, to a new goal near the town of Cap. Andrade. A slightly later start of 13:30 was set to give the conditions time to improve.

The pilots largely stayed together on the first leg of the task, stopping several times to climb and flying at an altitude generally between 1000 and 1400 meters After tagging the first turnpoint the field split, with one group opting to go north of the optimized line, back along the path they had just flown, and another choosing to go south of the optimized line. Both paths worked but the pilots who went North ended up reaching the second turnpoint faster, with the southerly group getting stuck looking for a climb about halfway there. This spread the field out more than in previous tasks with a lead gaggle of around 30 pilots reaching the final turnpoint several minutes ahead of the chase groups.

56 pilots made it into goal, and the fastest time was 1:47:48. Winning XC Paragliding races these days is often coming down to mere seconds, and sometimes pilots opt to push to the end of speed low rather than taking another minute in that last thermal. Austin Cox, the 5th pilot overall for the day, crossed goal just one meter above the ground and another, Ivan Colas, cruised over the line with a more leisurely three meters to spare. Another 8 pilots reached the end of speed needing one more climb to make the final 2km to goal—a climb that they couldn’t find. This provided an exciting finish for the residents of Cap. Andrade, who had come out to watch the race. Once pilots landed they were greeted warmly by the locals with a beer and an impromptu Churasco, complements of the city.

The overall winner was Jose Barrera of Ecuador. The winning female was Violeta Jimenez of the USA. The winning team was Ozone.

Conditions look good for the final task and with just 30.4 points separating the top 5 pilots, the fight for the top spot on the podium is still very much alive.
