Another great day in Valadares
- Apr 24 2026
The forecast for the day was mixed, with some models calling for a day similar to the one before and others slightly more pessimistic. The pilots arrived to the hill to find better launch conditions and the task committee called a 71k triangle task to the area south-east of the Ibuturina peak. With the day already working and some uncertainty about how good the conditions would be, a slightly earlier window was set and a race start of 12:35.
For the first leg most of the lead gaggle took a route north of the optimized line with Doug DeGeorge and a few other pilots opting for a more direct line, which initially seemed faster as the northerly pilots had to stop and climb. By the time they had tagged the first turnpoint and were on their way to the second, Honorin Hamard was well in the lead and the gaggle was strung out behind him until pilots came back together in a climb before tagging the second turnpoint. After the second turnpoint Caio Buzzarello made a lone break to the west which put him in the lead for a while till a needed climb allowed the lead gaggle, led again by Honorin, to almost catch back up. Unfortunately without the help of the gaggle Caio landed short of the 3rd turnpoint after his bold solo break. After tagging the last turnpoint most pilots made beeline to the end of speed section without stopping to climb, leaving most pilots reaching ESS low and needing a small climb before being able to reach goal.
In the end, 71 pilots made goal with an additional 6 reaching the end of speed but unable to glide to the finish.
The overall winner was Honorin Hamard of France, who was the first task winner of the week to get the full 1000 points available, being both the fastest to the end of speed and having led the field for much of the task.
The top woman was Violeta Jimenez, and the top team was Ozone.
Conditions look good for the rest of the week, so hopefully another 3 days of great racing awaits the pilots.
A special shout-out and thanks from the pilots to local legend Xispita. Xispita has been assisting at nearly every competition in Governador Valadares for over two decades, always greeting pilots with a smile and a friendly greeting. Thanks Xispita!
