A fast, racy first task to start the competition
- Apr 21 2026
The weather forecast for the day predicted a short available task window with uncertainty coming from potential rain and lift shutting down earlier than usual, so the task committee had their job cut out for them.
A 52.1k task was called that would keep pilots to the east and south of the launch, which is where the best conditions and least chance for rain were predicted. The course was a zigzag followed by a triangle that took pilots back north to a goal south of the Ibuturina peak.
As pilots were preparing, a cloud formed over the launch peak and light rain started to fall. The take-off was delayed till conditions improved, and after an hour conditions cleared sufficiently to open the task window at 12:15 with a race start of 13:30, giving pilots enough time to launch in the light conditions.
Most pilots launched from the North Launch and then made their way around the hills to wait for the start on the south east portion of the exit cylinder. Once the race started, pilots reported strong but smooth lift. Numerous clouds marked the thermals, so pilots where generally able to fly the task straight on course line with full bar (full speed) racing in-between climbs of 2 to 5 meters per second, and top of lift around 1600m.
71 pilots made goal, with another 9 making the end of speed section but then being too low to reach goal. The task winner, Arthur Moindrot of France, completed the task with an average speed of 38.33 km/h. Baptiste Lambert was actually the first pilot to reach the End of Speed with an average of 38.47 km/h. Baptiste, Marcelo Sanchez Vilchez, and Honorin Hamard all reached the End of Speed faster than the eventual winners, and having lead much of the race had more leading points, but not being high enough to subsequently reach goal cost them the win–but made for a dramatic finish.
The overall winner of the day was Arthur Moindrot of France and the top woman was Violeta Jimenez of the USA.
