New Season, New Skies: Paragliding World Cup Kicks Off in Algodonales, Spain
- May 05 2025

The wait is over. After months of training and anticipation, the 2025 Paragliding World Cup season is ready to take flight—and it’s doing so in spectacular fashion against the sun-soaked skies of Algodonales, Spain.
For the first time in history, the World Cup is heading to this iconic flying hotspot nestled in the Sierra de Cádiz. Known for its warm flying culture, reliable conditions, and stunning landscapes, Algodonales is primed to host the season opener from May 10 to 17. And the flying community couldn’t be more excited to see the world’s top pilots return to the skies.
With 120 elite pilots on the grid—including defending champions and hungry newcomers—the pressure is on to set the tone for the season ahead. A strong performance in Spain could provide the momentum needed to carry them all the way to the Superfinal.
Algodonales has long been a favourite among free-flyers, and with good reason. For over 30 years, this area has stood as one of Europe’s premier flight zones. The launch on Sierra de Líjar offers pilots access to a range of conditions, with multiple take-off options for varying wind directions and wide, safe landing zones in the valley below.
The spring weather in Andalusia is ideal for racing: warm days, clear skies, and reliable thermals. With over nine hours of sunlight in May, pilots can expect long, productive flying days. The mix of ridges, hills, and farmland offers both technical challenges and opportunities for bold maneuvers—setting the stage for a thrilling competition.

Setting the Pace
The 2025 season begins in Algodonales, where fierce competition is expected. Among the 128 pilots, Jonathan Marin, Luis Martinez Iturbe, Marcelo Sanchez Vilchez, and Juan Ospina are all aiming for a strong start. Add to this mix Honorin Hamard and the ever-determined Darko Stankovski, and you’ve got a field that will deliver high-stakes action from the get-go.
On the women’s side, Constance Mettetal will face strong competition from Alexia Fischer and Violeta Jimenez, both no strangers to the Paragliding World Cup podium. With 21 AA-rated pilots and over 120 competitors total, every task will matter, and a solid performance early on could set the pace for the rest of the season.
